Winter hardened the Maidan.

What had begun as a protest became a functioning city inside the city: tents, field kitchens, volunteers, drums, flags, fires, pallets, tyre barricades, improvised offices, and thousands of people preparing to remain through the cold.

I kept returning with my camera.

Revolution on the Maidan, Volume II follows the central winter period of Ukraine’s Revolution of Dignity. The photographs record not only demonstrations and barricades, but the daily routines that allowed the protest camp to survive.

Then the photographs change.

After the February deaths, flowers and memorial arrangements begin appearing among the familiar streets and structures. The same square is still there, but it no longer looks the same.

Volume II contains photographs 233–561 in the continuous chronological sequence begun in Volume I and completed in Volume III.

These photographs record the winter when Maidan ceased being merely a protest and became something considerably larger—and considerably more dangerous.
