Such is Life

For years I traveled without carrying a serious camera.

Naturally, that was when the best scenes appeared.

A strange face across a restaurant. An animal doing something ridiculous. A perfect plate of food. A street scene that lasted perhaps ten seconds before everyone walked away.

Eventually I learned.

From then on, the camera came with me.

Such is Life is a photographic record of the things I happened to notice while traveling: people, places, animals, restaurants, markets, food, and the small scenes that usually disappear before anyone thinks to preserve them.

There is no grand theory behind the collection. I photographed what caught my attention.

Sometimes it was beautiful. Sometimes it was funny. Occasionally it was disturbing. Often it was simply ordinary life at exactly the right moment.

Photography changed the way I traveled because it forced me to look more carefully. Once you begin searching for the photograph hiding inside an ordinary scene, ordinary scenes become considerably less ordinary.

This album is what I saw.
