Revolution on the Maidan, Volume III

By spring 2014, Ukraine’s government had fallen.

Maidan remained.

The final volume of my photographic record begins after the most violent stage of the revolution, when the square had become something different: part protest camp, part memorial, part military gathering place, and part wounded public space slowly attempting to return to ordinary life.

The photographs show flowers and portraits of the dead, tents and barricades that remained behind, volunteers, priests, armed formations, flags, graffiti honoring Maidan’s heroes, and the streets around the square as winter gives way to spring and summer.

Gradually, another process becomes visible. Cobbles are stacked again. Barricades begin to disappear. The square starts changing back.

Not completely.

Revolution on the Maidan, Volume III contains photographs 562–804, continuing the chronological sequence begun in Volumes I and II.

This final volume is not simply about what remained after a revolution. It documents the difficult moment when a place that has become history must somehow become a city square again.
