Bangkok food begins long before anything reaches the plate.

It begins with prawns and mantis shrimp spread across market tables. Clams stacked on ice. Sausages hanging beside charcoal grills. Ducks roasting behind glass. Skewers smoking over open flames while somebody nearby is chopping, frying, boiling, or shouting an order.

Then night arrives, and the cooking continues.

Thai Food in Pictures is a photographic essay through Bangkok’s markets, street stalls, kitchens, and food scenes.

The sequence moves from raw ingredients to preparation and finished dishes: blue-clawed river prawns, seafood, satay, sausages, roast duck, suckling pig, noodles, rice dishes, nuts, fried insects, and the enormous range of food being prepared at street level throughout the city.

The book is told almost entirely through photographs. There is little explanation because very little is needed.

Bangkok already provides the color, smoke, flame, texture, and movement.

I simply photographed what was in front of me.
